FLOOR RENNOVATION

The repair or reconstruction of stone floor, especially an old one, is a process which is done in several stages. In each individual case, the used approach can be different. It all depends on the condition of the floor, used stone and customer’s wish. Some of the procedures are the same in all of the cases.

The first step of stone floor renovation is the repair of the blemishes of the stone surface. Contrary to the expectations, the issue is simpler if we are dealing with effective, multi-coloured stone. Paradoxically, it is more difficult in single-coloured surfaces.

One of the techniques used in repairing of damaged stone, is so called “stone grooving”. This means cutting out of the damaged part and replacing it with corresponding piece of stone of the same or very similar colour.

Another, much easier way, is to fill the missing parts with a special polyester or epoxide resin. There are many of these resins on the market, in various colours or colourless. Apart from that, you can use special colours that can bring on the desired colour shade. Resins can be thick or liquid. They are supplied in solid form and a stiffener which is added separately. It is important to say that, when working with these products, it is necessary to adhere to the producer’s recommended mixing ratio.  In some of the cases, the change of the recommended dosage can lead even to a change of the colour shade of used resin. On the other hand, if you use too little of the resin, it may not solidify properly.

At this stage of the fight for the beauty of the renovated floor, there are two specialized companies at the Polish market that have a complete control of the resin market. The products that they offer are sufficient for the needs of companies that do renovation and maintenance works.

The hollow, that is meant to be filled with a cement, is first needed to get rid of any dirt or weaker or loose parts that would not stay in place during the next stage of work. The cleaning is done with a mini grinder equipped with a suitable milling cutter, or with a hammer and a chisel. It all depends on concrete situation.

The prepared surface must be dry, so that the cement will adhere sufficiently to the surface of the stone. When treating most of the defect, the cement should be applied in layers. After partial filling, you should wait a few minutes until the cement starts to solidify. After that, apply (or pour in) another layer until the cement protrudes a bit above the surface of the floor.
