Gardens where a lawn is not needed

Ground cover plants will replace the lawn in many places. You may like them too, despite the fact that your garden has always been ruled by greenery. In some shady or too dry places, even the lawn doesn’t thrive, so it’s no wonder we’re looking for an alternative. And this is exactly what a number of ground cover plants offer us, which will bring an unconventional look to our gardens and the surroundings of the house.

Stone walkways and paths are ideal companions for most ground cover plants. Some plants of this species can be considered as walkable, such as Sagina subulata. Others would be sorry to step on, such as low phlox (Phlox subulata).

Isotoma fluviatilis (pictured) loves clay-sandy soil. It is therefore an ideal plant among tiles and sandstone pedals. Once an isotoma blooms with tiny white flowers, there is perhaps no more beautiful ground cover plant.

You can plant many different types of rock plants on gravel and stony subsoil. Or simply create a rock garden where nothing else is growing and in places where there is a long-term drought. The problematic section of your garden will suddenly turn into a charming garden nook.

Why have a lawn in the garden when the garden can be full of beautiful flowering plants! The white and silvery carpet is formed by the Cerastium tomentosum, the lush green-yellow carpet is created after planting the sedum ‘Angelina‘, and the pink-purple carpet comes from the cushion-growing plants Thymus serpyllum.

Thymum serpyllum – abundantly flowering narrow-leaved thyme can do wonders. It grows rapidly and soon forms a very compact growth. Once it blooms, it will enchant anyone who sees it. It would be a pity not to have such a plant in your garden.

The Turkish speedwell (Veronica liwanensis) will always give your garden and the surroundings of the house a welcome blue color of flowers. These plants create charming neat pillows that glow blue later in April and May. The plants tolerate stepping on, so they are suitable for stair crevices, between tiles, in pathways and in all places where loamy sandy soil is permeable.

Ground cover perennials can also be successfully combined with other, higher perennials, such as lavender or potentila (Potentila nitida) or houseleek (Sempervivum genus).

A number of leafy creeping plants can also be used as a lawn replacement. Each of them provides a different shade of green color and thus creates a neat landscape which will be very joyful to look at. You can choose from the following plants: Lamium purpureum, Armeria maritima, Stachys byzantina, Lysimachia nummularia, Ajuga reptans and other species.
