RENNOVATION OF FLOORS – TOOLS – RECOMMENDATION AND ADVICE

Instead of the grinding disc, you can use three smaller discs with a smaller diameter. This is quite an important improvement because if you use a different diameter of the grinding discs, you can expect a different effect, which depends on the disc construction.

Although I do not recommend this solution, in some special cases it is possible to attach three smaller hoop-and-loop fastener grinding discs on a hoop-and-loop fastener for one bigger disc. They will then work as one big grinding disc and the effect will be the same as when using a big disc. This also applies to discs meant for three discs with a smaller diameter attached on one bigger disc. This is not recommendable, too, only for exceptional situations when it can be used. it will also bring a slightly different effect. The issue is that interchangeable use of discs with different diameters on different discs can (though not necessarily) cause a different final effect than was intended and the discs wear out faster at the same time.

Unfortunately, there is no big choice among machines of Polish origin. When choosing a foreign manufacturer, it is important to take into consideration the speed and effectivity of service in a particular country. What is the sense in buying a Swedish machine if its repair takes half a year because it has to travel around the whole world, just to be repaired by a Chinese repairman. You do not buy the machine to have it in your workshop but to use it and make a living. This is why, when buying a new grinder, it is important to pay attention to this aspect.

The use of proper tools is an important part of the work. Most often there are discs that contain diamond or corundum encapsulated in resin. Diamond is a precious mineral which is famous for its exceptional hardness. It has the value of 10 on the Mohs scale. This makes diamond the hardest known mineral. Corundum is on the second place (value 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness).

To grind stone surfaces, you need to use several discs of different degrees. They vary from very aggressive with rough diamond (or other) grains up to the finest with the smallest grains.

The construction of tools is quite important. If you imagine a stone floor – and a stone floor consists of many pieces of stone laid one next to each other – you can see that there are differences between particular pieces in their level. Even though the difference can be just in millimetres, it can be just exactly the one millimetre that prevents you from having a perfectly even surface. That is why it is important for the grinding element of the disc to be so hard that it does not break while in contact with surface unevenness. It can also have a rounded shape. In dependence on the possibilities, we can first use metal grinding elements. They make it possible to make the surface even but they are also quite hard and you do not need to be afraid to damage them.

In the final phase of the job it is recommended that the disc is not rounded at the edge. In this way it can get the closest to walls, columns etc. Unfortunately, many companies do not take these nuances seriously and they produce tools that tend to break during work or just do not allow for precise grinding.

Every tool used for grinding requires us to get to know it and get used to it. The most efficient method is the method of trial and error. You need to learn to operate the individual tools. Not all the degrees of particular sets can fulfil our expectations. It could also happen that some of the degrees will need to be changed or you will need to make use of the offer of another manufacturer. It is self-evident that people with long year practice have certain knowledge and tools of dealing with specific challenges. It will be more difficult for beginners.

There is a general rule of using hard tools for soft stones and soft tools for hard stones. But I can assure you that there are discs which allow you to successfully grind almost any type of stone.

In conclusion, I would like to mention that the grinding discs for wet grinding are meant for working with water and are not meant for dry work. “You were right” is not enough. It is a waste of money.
