{"id":5483,"date":"2020-11-20T18:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T17:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.svetkamene.eu\/?p=5483"},"modified":"2021-12-29T20:48:54","modified_gmt":"2021-12-29T19:48:54","slug":"gloucester-cathedral-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/index.php\/en\/2020\/11\/20\/gloucester-cathedral-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Gloucester Cathedral &#8211; Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4>Reconstruction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Like any monumental building, the cathedral needs extensive repairs from time to time. And like any building of this scale, it struggles with a&nbsp;lack of funds. This is no exception here. Intensive repairs of this landmark of Gloucestershire have been underway for almost four years. As one of the few lucky people, I&nbsp;was allowed to see the ongoing repairs directly from the scaffolding, accompanied by a&nbsp;Polish colleague from Krakow. The last complete renovation of the cathedral took place at the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial phase of repairs began with a&nbsp;thorough cleaning of the stone surface. Water vapour was chosen as the only permitted method of cleaning. Thus, after almost 150 years, Gloucester&#8217;s&nbsp;pride began to slowly lose its grey-and-black robes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"746\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/e840dda4af545e4c1b65faeabcfc7bf7_M-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/e840dda4af545e4c1b65faeabcfc7bf7_M-1.jpg 746w, https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/e840dda4af545e4c1b65faeabcfc7bf7_M-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/e840dda4af545e4c1b65faeabcfc7bf7_M-1-675x450.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Repairs are currently underway in the oldest part of the cathedral from the &#8222;Norman Period&#8220;. It was interesting for me that after steam cleaning, the heavily corroded parts of the stone are not removed at all and their future is left to time and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"746\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/01-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/01-11.jpg 746w, https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/01-11-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/01-11-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Cement repairs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century cement came into fashion in construction. It was added whenever possible. The cathedral didn&#8217;t escape it either. The second phase of repairs is the removal of all possible cement mortar fillings. Even Roman bricks from the former fortifications were used to complete the missing stones. Some of them still have a&nbsp;Latin inscription on them and there are more than enough of them in the masonry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During repairs of historic buildings any intervention in the masonry is inadmissible in our country. It had nothing to do with modern graffiti. The lowest outer part of the masonry is densely studded with various engraved messages, dates and names of cadets in service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4>Finally, two small funny facts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last repairs, there was a&nbsp;request to extend the windows to better illuminate the interiors of the &#8222;Norman part&#8220;. The request was met, but in a&nbsp;rather curious way.&nbsp; If you look closely at the following photo, you will find that the extended windows do not have a&nbsp;so-called lining (stone frame) and the stones in the upper arch of the window are held only by the lime mortar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"746\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/09-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/09-1.jpg 746w, https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/09-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/svetkamene.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/09-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I used the word &#8222;possible&#8220; above: in the same photo you can also see the use of cement mortar to neaten the upper arch of the extended window.
