\nThe Lesn\u00ed potok basin is linked to stonemasonry\nonly by its geological bedrock \u2013 the \u0158\u00ed\u010dany granite. In the\nnorthern part of the catchment we can find a fine-grained variety of\nthe rock \u2013 the so-called Jevany granite. Just as most granitoid\nrocks, the \u0158\u00ed\u010dany granite is also low in basic cations Ca, Mg and\nK, which is why the substrates and soils (kambisol) formed by the\ngranite erosion are naturally prone to acidification. The process of\nacidification became a major topic in the filed of environmental\nresearch in the last decades of the 20th century. Especially the\n1970s and 80s were a period when emissions (releasing) of\nacidificants such as nitrogen and sulphur compounds in the Czech\nRepublic and Central Europe culminated. The issue was caused by\nenvironment-unfriendly production of electricity by burning brown\ncoal without any subsequent treatment of the waste gases. A known\nconsequence of acidification was an extensive forest dieback,\nespecially in Kru\u0161n\u00e9 or Krkono\u0161e Mountains. In northern Europe the\nacidification resulted not only in forest damage, but also in fish\ndying out in dozens of lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nGoing back to the Lesn\u00ed potok basin \u2013 what kind\nof research is being carried out there, who is doing it and why? To\nexplain it fully, we need to go back to 1993 when a large project of\nmonitoring small river basins called GEOMON was launched by the Czech\nGeological Survey. The project mainly involves monitoring the\ninfluence of both animate and inanimate nature on the cycle of\nsubstances. A total of 14 catchment areas were selected throughout\nBohemia and Moravia, including the Lesn\u00ed potok basin near the\ncountry\u2019s capital Prague. From the start of the project the Czech\nGeological Survey has been cooperating with a number of other\ninstitutions, such as the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute,\nForestry and Game Management Research Institute, Institute of\nHydrodynamics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Water Resources\nChrudim, Charles University, and the Institute of Geology of the\nCzech Academy of Sciences (IGCAS). The IGCAS takes care of the Lesn\u00ed\npotok basin. The sampling and analytical methodology are uniform\nthroughout the whole river basin network, which significantly\nincreases the reliability of the data and allows for comparison of\nthe inidividual catchment areas. The basic principle of\nbiogeochemical monitoring is a periodic collection of natural water\nsamples (atmospheric precipitation in open space, under the crowns of\nselected tree types, and surface water), in which the required\nchemical parameters are determined. Selected flows of substances are\nthen analysed and their increase or decrease in the given area is\ncalculated. By comparing the results from different catchment areas,\nwe can obtain information about changes in the forest ecosystems in\ndifferent parts of the Czech Republic, or about the extent of local\ncontamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThe Lesn\u00ed potok basin is located in the nature\nreserve Vod\u011bradsk\u00e9 bu\u010diny (Vod\u011brady Beechwood) established in\n1955 on an area of 6.82 km2<\/sup>.\nThe territory of Vod\u011bradsk\u00e9 bu\u010diny was not converted into\nagricultural land because the soil in the area is rocky and\nrelatively shallow. The predominantly deciduous original forests were\nchanged by forestry activities into purely beech forests with almost\nno fir trees. The territory of the LES basin covers an area of 0.76\nkm2<\/sup>,\nthe closure profile with a weir is 406 metres above sea level, the\nhighest point of the catchment area is 505 metres above sea level.\nThe average annual temperature is between 7.6 to 9.2 \u00b0C. Ninety-nine\npercent of the total catchment area is woodland, 46% of the woodland\nconstitute coniferous trees (mostly spruce), 53% are deciduous trees\n(mostly beech, some hornbeam, birch, and oak). In the river basin\nthere is a Thompson spillway that continually records the water\noutflow. There used to be a mechanical limnigraph measuring the water\noutflow (flow rate) in which the record sheets had to be changed\nweekly. In 2003 the mechanical device was replaced by a digital\nlimnigraph made by OTT HydroMet which records the outflow\nelectronically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
