\nFrom the Lou\u0148ovice Open Air Museum we follow the\nblue tourist trail leading south-east. From the signpost the trail\nleads us slightly uphill for about 2 km until we arrive at the\nremains of stone foundations of an old smithy used by the\nstonemasons. There is a place called Kam\u00e9nka that abounds in large\ngranite boulders. One of the foundation stones of the National\nTheatre comes from this place. The foundation stone for the theatre\nwas originally brought from the memorial mountain \u0158\u00edp five days\nbefore the ceremony (held on 16 May 1868). However, the boulder was a\nhard and irregularly jointed basalt and it was not possible to shape\nit according to architect Josef Z\u00edtek\u2019s design so that the\nfounding charter could be placed inside. One of the members of the\nSociety for the Foundation of the Czech National Theatre, a Prague\nstonemason Gabriel \u017di\u017eka, hastily made a large two-part lidded\nstone block according to Z\u00edtek\u2019s design in his workshop. The block\nwas then placed on the boulder brought from \u0158\u00edp and on another\nboulder brought from Radho\u0161\u0165. The rocks thus formed a symbolic\nBohemian-Moravian foundation of the theatre. Shorty after the\nceremony a foundation wall was built with twenty different rocks from\nvarious memorable places from Bohemia and Moravia walled into it. The\nstone faces have remained exposed, only the foundation stone was\ncompletely walled in. Perhaps that is why it was forgotten in the\ncourse of time only to be re-discovered ninety-five years later in\nMay 1963. The stone was then partially exposed as we can see it today\nwith one slight change in the construction in 1983. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nWe did not know much about the origin and history\nof our most memorable stone when it was uncovered. Rumour had it that\nit came from a wood called Kam\u00e9nka near Lou\u0148ovice in the\n\u010cernokostelecko Region, which is why a simple memorial was unveiled\nin the centre of Lou\u0148ovice on 10 November 1963. This fact was\nconfirmed and more information about the history of the foundation\nstone was revealed twenty years later when the National Theatre\nreopened after an extensive reconstruction in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
